A 1 Bedroom Plus Den is Plenty of Space for Working from Home

A 1 bedroom plus den is one of the most popular choices for rental apartments at McGill Ridge Apartments in Kamloops. While a 1 bedroom is ample for most singles, a 1 bedroom 1 den configuration provides more options. Whether you’re a single or a couple, that extra bit of self-contained space adds some convenience and a little privacy. Whether you use the den for watching your favourite TV shows, reading, or working from home, your den will get a lot of use.

The pandemic is probably the reason that 1 bedroom apartments with a den have become so desirable over the past couple of years. As many of us have learned, working from home has its challenges, particularly if you don’t have a dedicated work space. Working from a living room table or bedroom can work, but having main rooms serve double duty often means distraction and cramped living quarters. Dens at McGill Ridge (we call them “studies”) allow you to have a self-contained room, you can keep your home life separate from your work life and avoid cluttering the rest of your living spaces.

What is a Den?

In BC, there are no regulations for what a realtor, apartment landlord or private landlord can call a “den”. According to a CBC News article, the Real Estate Association of BC, Real Estate Council of BC, and the Ministry of Housing all confirmed that there are no rules on square footage or features for a den. A “den” could be an alcove, a closet barely big enough for a vacuum cleaner and broom, or a small room.

At McGill Ridge Apartments, a typical 1 bedroom 1 den is about 60 square feet larger than a 1 bedroom apartment. In addition to a work-from-home space, a den makes a cozy media room, or can provide a little extra in-apartment storage space, making apartment living much easier.

What Can Fit in a Den?

Because it’s a “den”, and not a second bedroom, there isn’t enough space for a bed or large executive desk and sofa. As you can see from the architectural illustration above, the den will fit a small desk, desk chair, bookcase, and another small chair (i.e. armless chair, slipper chair, side chair, occasional chair, small club chair, small barrel chair). When you choose furniture for your den, it’s best to opt for scaled down apartment-size furnishings. Big box stores and online furniture stores provide many furniture options for smaller spaces.
